A man of humble beginnings, Albert H. Dobbins was hom in Grifftn, Spalding County, Georgia on August 27, 1927. His parents were young and impressionable. Amanda Green and Pete Dobbins were fifteen years old and nineteen years at the time of their first child's birth, but what seemingly was in early, unplanned pregnancy soon came to be known as a timely, divine conception of a man known for his musical talents, intellectual prowess, and charming good looks.
Albert's early years were uneventful. His mother and father provided what they could until they eventually moved him to Adanta, Georgia to complete his formative education. It was at David T. Howard, a now landmark in historic Atlanta Fourth Ward community, that his family and friends believe that God, alone, reached down and touched Albert with the hand of artistry. This was also the time he and Dorethea Crawford introduced his ftrst child and only son, Harold, to the world Three years later his second child and only daughter, Debbie, was hom to Selma Jones. He flourished as a budding, saxophonist; his natural talent was unmatched. A phenomenal player in his own rite, Albert became known for playing melodic saxophone tunes inside and outside of the school building. He even created and steered his own band known as the Dobbins Rf?ythm Boys. Many of the members, including their dedicated name-sake, became world known professional recording artists. Life was good, and Albert embraced it. He graduated from David T. Howard in 1949 with a plan to make something great of his extraordinary talent. The sky was the limit and there was no stopping his momentum.
Albert, like most young men of his day, was drafted and sent to serve in the United States military. He served a short tour just after the tail-end of \Vorld War II, but his desire to return home and start his life was paramount. He married the love of life, a young teacher names Christine Brown, in 1951 and together they raised his son.
Shordy thereafter, Albert realized his longtime dream of professional musicianship. He lived forty plus years in New York City and was afforded opportunities that only some experience in dreams. A well-known solo and support saxophonist, Albert played for artists such as Little Richard, Billy Wright, Duke Ellington and B.B. King. H e was a common name in the big city and he maintained regular bookings at popular clubs in N ew York. His impact on early Jazz and R&B was subtle, but remarkable.
In more recent years, Albert returned to Atlanta, Georgia and established his church home at West Side Community C.M.E. under the leadership of Reverend Stephen D elaine. He transitioned from labor to reward on the eve of Sunday, September 14, 2014. He was a resident at Nurse Care of Buckhead where he spent most of his days congregating and listening to a familiar sound; jazz from the greats that he had played with. To this day, Albert's sounds can be found in old recordings and online. His contributions to American music is notable and he truly is an example how to embrace gifts and talents in God's appointed time.
Albert Dobbins was preceded in death by his parents, Amanda Green and Pete Dobbins; his wife, Christine Brown Dobbins and his son, Harold Dobbins, Sr.
Albert leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Desdimonia Cross; daughter-in-law, Louise Dobbins; six grandchildren: Dr. Harold Dobbins, Jr. (Dr. Omi J.), Joseph Cross, Gibran Cross, Joy Dobbins-Bostick (Arzell), Royce Cross, Faith Crosss; eleven great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
