The Reverend Dr. Gregory A. Sutton Senior Pastor
Donnie Marie Pickett Dixon shared her years on earth with family, friends, and colleagues, primar-
ily, in three cities, San Antonio, Texas, Baltimore, Maryland, and Atlanta, Georgia. Born in San Antonio
on April 2, 1942 to the late Dorothy M. Pickett and the late Fred Bethel Pickett, Donnie Marie attended
both Catholic and public schools of San Antonio and graduated with high honors from Wheatley High
School in 1959. In San Antonio, she enjoyed the support of a large extended and exceptionally talented
family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. During her senior year at Wheatley, she was elected
Miss Homecoming and served in leadership roles in the Girl Scouts and in Jack and Jill ofAmerica. She
was preceded in death by her brother, James Carter Pickett.
Donnie Marie attended Spelman College and graduated in 1963 with a major in Psychology. While at Spelman, she met a Morehouse student, Robert Dixon, and they formed a union, which lasted until her death on October 14, 2015. To this union were born three children, Robin Kathleen, Robert Carter, and Rebecca Suzanne. Robin Kathleen was born in San Antonio, Texas. Robert Carter and Rebecca Suzanne were born in Baltimore, MD where the family resided for more than twelve years.
When the Dixon family moved to Atlanta, Donnie Marie pursued a degree in Library Science. She earned a master's degree in Library Science in 1982 from Atlanta University and began a career path that would involve work at the Atlanta University Center Robert Woodruff Library and positions in the Atlanta Fulton County Library System. She ended her career in 2005 as manager of the AdamsvilleCollier Heights Branch of the Atlanta Fulton County Library System. In her work she was known for her professionalism, integrity, and dedication to delivering to the community the very best service.
Although Donnie Marie Pickett Dixon had varied interests, family was first and foremost in her life. She did strive to assist her children and her grandchildren in the pursuit oftheir goals and dreams. She was uncompromising in her devotion and dedication to the development and success of all members of her family. No sacrifice was too great, if it would likely aid some family member in achieving a well-defined goal. She strove to have her children and grandchildren understand her philosophy and to realize the power it bestowed on the family unit. The legacy of Donnie Marie Pickett Dixon will be found in the way her children and their children's children strive to nurture and develop their families -the way they assist and enable the dreams of future generations. Remembrance and commemoration are entrusted to her husband of fifty-two years, Dr. Robert M. Dixon; her children, Robin Kathleen Dixon, Robert Carter Dixon, and Dr. Rebecca Suzanne Dixon; her grandchildren, Kalin Marie Jarvis, Ryan Samuel Jarvis, Kahlil Yusef Dixon, Carter James Dixon, and Sidney Marlee Dixon; and a multitude of distant relatives and friends. May they never forsake this legacy. May they be inspired by her example.
