Today God has called us together to celebrate the homegoing of Mr. James (Jimmy) E. Dessasau, Jr., who reached out and touched the Master's hand and made his journey to the promise land on February 20, 2001.
Jimmy was born June 27, 1933 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Mrs. Alice M. Washington and the late Mr. James E. Dessasau, Sr. After the death of his mother he was reared by a very loving stepmother, the late Mrs. Inez L. Mathis Dessasau.
He was educated in the Atlanta Public School System and was a member of the 1952 graduating class of Booker T. Washington High School. He served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp and received an honorable discharge.
He gave his life to Christ at an early age when he joined the West Hunter Street Baptist Church under the late Reverend Samuel P. Pettigrue. He reinstated his membership under Reverend Dr. T. DeWitt Smith, Jr.
Mr. Dessasau was a retired Public Safety Officer II from Georgia State University. He served for sixteen years until he retired in 1995 due to illness. He was a member of the American Legion Post #574 where he served as Post Commander for many years. On the national level, he was appointed to serve on the National Americanism Council from October 16, 1968 until the close of the Fall meeting in 1969.
Jimmy enjoyed writing poetry. He wrote the poem, "When I Must Leave" in 1985 as a tribute to his late father. The poem which is printed on the insert of the program is his testimony to the fact that "God's days are eternal and man's days are numbered."
Mr. Dessasau is survived by a loving, devoted wife, Willie Doris Dessasau; god-brother, Seaborn Ware; daughter, Twana L. Dessasau; son, Sharrieff N. Dessasau; stepdaughters, Cynthia R. Parks and Constance D. Parks; grandchildren, Jalair E. Gardner, Kyrie A. Gardner and Toya Knight; adopted daughter, Kim E. Whigham; adopted granddaughter, Mia E. Whigham; brothers-in-law, Irvin Tucker, Jr. and Robert Bivins, Sr; sisters-in-law, Kathleen C. Tucker and Daisy B. Bivins; a host of nieces, nephews., other relatives and friends.
