Mrs. Barbara C. Dancy departed from this life on Tuesday, J anuary 22, 2013 in Montgomery, Alabama. Barbara was born on January 24, 1937, the youngest child of six to Calvin Alexander Carpenter and Lillian Alma Carpenter in Gaffney, South Carolina. At an early age, she displayed a strong interest in both music and education. Her sibling's interest in the piano motivated her to also take lessons. Barbara worked hard at piano and she became the pianist for the Senior Choir at Limestone Baptist Church during her teen years. As a fourth grade student, Barbara was inspired by the kindness and limitless encouragement she received from her school teacher and as a result, developed a life goal of becoming an educator so that she too could help others. Barbara was a dedicated student and attended the public schools in Cherokee County, South Carolina. She graduated from Granard High School in 1954 and continued her education at Johnson C. Smith University where she received her Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education in 1958. After graduating from college, Barbara began her teaching career in Warren County, Georgia. She later moved to the Atlanta metropolitan area and taught 1st thru 3rd grades at East Point, Grove Park, I.P. Reynolds and Cleveland Avenue elementary schools. Following many years as a successful and effective teaching professional, Barbara continued her education and received her Masters of Arts in Education at Atlanta University in 1972.
While attending Johnson C. Smith University, Barbara met her college sweetheart, the late Amos Henry Dancy, and they were later married. The couple moved to Atlanta, Georgia in June, 1960. Soon thereafter, they joined Providence Baptist Church and were blessed with two beautiful children, Alicia Renay and Isaac Renard.
Barbara worked tirelessly as a dedicated educational professional in the Atlanta Public School system and made strong strides in the improvement of education and social conditions within her community. She often provided extra, after hours tutoring to students and would often invite them to spend the weekend with her at her home to improve their skills. Education was very important to Barbara and her life's motto was "for every child with an educational need, I am there to provide." Barbara's commitment to education included involvement with the Atlanta Association of Educators, Georgia Association of Education and the National Education Association. As a member of Providence Baptist Church, Barbara served for many years on the Deaconess Board. She was also Director and Pianist for the Children's Choir and Sunday School. Additi nally, Barbara was a member of the Senior Choir and she often meditated to the lyrics of her favorite songs, "Lord I'm Blessed", "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" and "Lord Keep Me Day by Day." Barbara was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She and her late husband Amos were a loving couple who shared with family and friends their home and many other resources. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her many friends and was an active member of the Modernistic and Robinson Heights Social Clubs. Her spirit and presence will certainly be missed. Barbara is survived by two children, Alicia Renay and Isaac Renard (Saundra); four grandsons, Jermil, David and Daniel (Alicia); Isaac Renard Jr., (Isaac) and one granddaughter, Hannah (Isaac); two sisters-in-law, Ada Lovick (Chester) and Edna Dancy (Raymond); one godson, Victor Freeman; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The Dancy family would like to acknowledge and express their gratitude and appreciation to Roselezena Tymes (Rose) , Baptist Hospice, Bea Burch, Gwen Childress, Gwen Callen and Tracey Dailey. Each of these individuals/organizations provided outstanding care to Barbara during her stay in Montgomery, Alabama.
