Benjamin Jefferson (Boobie) Cummings, Jr. was a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Oglethorpe Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School, where he graduated in 1956 with honors and lettered in basketball and baseball. Upon completing high school, Benjamin attended Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction in 1960. After graduation, he went to work for Russell, Banks and Jett Construction Company. In 1961, he entered the United States Army Corps of Engineers Branch School and served in the Army until 1964, receiving an honorable discharge. Upon ending his military service, he returned to work for his former employer, now H. J. Russell and Company.
In 1966, he was asked by Intergroup Relations Officer, Al Thompson of the Federal Housing Administration, Senator Herman Talmadge, Congressman Ronnie Thompson and Herman Russell to join the Federal Housing Administration as the first African-American Inspector in the government Housing System now known as HUD. During his tenure at HUD, he worked diligently through the Minority Contractors Association to bring in numerous minority contractors to construct, repair and rehabilitate HUD single family and multi-family developments. He also was instrumental in bringing other African
American inspectors to be employed by HUD. Benjamin retired from HUD in 1994 and returned to H. J.
Russell and Company, where he retired again in 2005. He was a life-long member of the Minority Contractors Association, a licensed general contractor in the states of Georgia and Alabama and a certified multi-family building inspector.
Benjamin was initiated in Gamma Epsilon Chapter of }Cappa Alpha Psi at Tuskegee Institute on December 5, 1957. He was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and he held numerous positions within the fraternity. Benjamin served on the Southeastern Province and National Senior Kappa Task Force. He received the "Kappa Man of the Year" from the College Park Alumni Chapter and also received his 50 year service pin and awards from the National, Southeastern Region and College Park Alumni Chapter in 2007 and 2008. Benjamin was one of the original members of the College Park Alumni Chapter.
He held directorships on the boards of numerous organizations in Georgia and Alabama including the Fulton County Board of Zoning and Appeals, Fulton County Planning and Review Board, Fulton County Community Advisory Board, Minority Contractors Association, Association for General Contractors, Tuskegee University National Alumni Board, Tuskegee University National Athletic Alumni Board, Tuskegee Architecture and Construction Alumni Association. He was also an active member of the Atlanta Tuskegee Alumni Club, Atlanta Tuskegee Travel Club, the Old Timers and Cascade McDonald's Group.
At an early age, Benjamin accepted Christ into in his life and became a member of Providence Baptist Church. He later joined East Lake United Methodist Church where he was an active member. After moving into the Ben Hill community, he joined Ben Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a member for over thirty-five years. While at Ben Hill UMC, he served as an usher, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Member of the Church Council, President of the United Methodist Men and other capacities within the church.
Benjamin is survived by a loving wife, Gwendolyn Marks Cummings; three daughters, Stephanie Bailey (Brent), Colette Cummings and Kristi Cummings; brothers-in-law, Alvin Marks (Claudia) and William Wilkes (Sybrina); granddaughters, Jujuan Odom and Lauren Bailey; aunt, Inez Cummings; cousins, Gwyned Simpson, Karen Rogers, Carl Cummings, a host of other relatives and friends.
