"Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commandedyou, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you {n the land which the LORD your God is giving you. " ~ Deuteronomy 5:16
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born ... (Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2a) Acquilla Ann Young was introduced into the world on July 11, 1943 in Danville, Virginia. She was born to James, Sr. and Naomi Young.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child...(l Corinthians 13:1la) Acquilla Ann, affectionately known to family andfriends as "Quilla" or "Aunt Quilla" was the tenth child of thirteen children. She graduatedfrom John M Langston High School in Danville, Virginia. She has always been an avid reader since her youth, and shared that passion with all she met. Shortly after graduation, she moved to New York City where she met and married the love ofher life, Willie Culver. To this union, their joy and only child Crystal Pia was born.
I must work the works ofHim that sent me, while it is day; ... (John 9:4) Acquilla accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age andjoined Mt. Sinai Glorious Church of God, where she was later baptized. Acquilla always had a love for the Word of God. She taught Sunday school at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia and servedfaithfully in a number ofcapacities until her illness. Her inner passion has always been to volunteer in the community. On any given occasion, Acquilla could be found serving the homeless, troubled youth, senior citizens and her community.
Man goethforth unto his work and to his labor until the evening. (Psalm 104:23) Acquilla workedfor over 35 years in the banking and insurance industries. As a trusted employee she worked for several major corporations such as Blue Cross/ Blue Shield ofGeorgia, SunTrust and SouthTrust/ Wachovia Banks. In addition to her many years ofservice in Corporate America, her most passionate work was with the Council ofAging to ensure that Georgia senior citizens were informed ofall resources and available services.
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Galatians 5:14) Acquilla gave ofherselfunselfishly to the things ofthe Lord. She could often be found volunteering in the community with Hands on Atlanta and Festival ofTrees. She also served her community by working with area after school programs, feeding the homeless, and many other projects ofneed. She also found great fulfillment in working with the Fulton County Voters Registration and Polls. She servedfor years registering Georgia constituents to vote and proudly worked her last Presidential election on November 4, 2008.
Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted.. (Matthew. 5:4) On Saturday, February 7, 2009; Acquilla Ann Culver was called home from labour to rest and be with her heavenly Father. She leaves to cherish her memories her only daughter, Crystal Pia Culver; brother James Jr.; sister Shirley (Robert); brother Freddie (Mary); sister Loretta (Wilbert); sister Almeda (Bob); brother David (Jean); sister Louise (Brandon); brother Nathan (Dee); sister Carolyn, sister Bernice (Gene); sister Cynthia and brother Ray; a host ofnieces, nephews, extendedfamily andfriends. She was preceded in death by her eldest brother James Jr. in the Korean War.
For I am now ready to be offered and the time ofmy departure is at hand. I have had a good life, but I have finished my course. I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown ofrighteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day ... (II Timothy 4:6-8)
