06ituary
Sep tember 30, 1930 -January 16, 2013
lloyd Xavier Creecy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Willie William Creecy and Edna Fulton Creecy. He had four brothers: Lewis (his twin who died shortly after they were born), Howard (who preceded him in death), Milton (who transitionedJanuary 17, 2013) and Charles Wesley.
As a young man, he believed in the value of education and matriculated at Booker T. Washington High School in New Orleans, Louisiana and went on to attend Grambling State University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1951. From 1951 to 1955, he valiantly served his country as a proud tnember of the U.S Air Force, and he also worked as a respected police officer with the New Orleans Police Department from 1955 to 1957. While earning his Master's degree from Xavier University and working in the New Orleans School System, he met and married Ethel Mae Fenton, who was also working in the school system.
Lloyd and Ethel moved their family to Atlanta, Georgia in 1968, where Lloyd was a Teacher, Administrative Assistant and Principal at Terry Mill, Tilson and Leslie J. Steele Elementary Schools, respectively, and an Administrator in the County Office. During his four years as Principal at Leslie Steele (now Ronald E McNair Elementary School), he earned the distinction of becoming the first African-American principal hired in Dekalb County after the county schools were integrated. Additionally, he was selected by his Superintendent as a "Who's Who" amongst prominent educators. During his 34-year educational career, he was highly regarded as he guided and inspired colleagues and future generations.
Lloyd earned additional certifications from Georgia State University (Masters plus 30 in 1973) and Atlanta University (Certification plus 30 in 1978). With his "can do" attitude and entrepreneurial spirit, he also found time to purchase and manage a Shell gas station in the Atlanta area while working in the school system.
Lloyd and Ethel were very present, active and loving parents. Lloyd served as President of his kids' high school PTSA and worked with the Youth for Christ choir for 12 years. When Ethel became ill, he nurtured and cared for her until her passing in 1999.
Lloyd was re-acquainted with Hattie Butler Artberry, a fellow alum of Grambling University whom he met 45 years prior. Hattie became his wife and was a loving source of comfort and encouragement. She remained by his side through sickness and health.
Always a strong presence and personality, he had a great sense of humor and a propensity for recalling good jokes. He was a survivor, and even in sickness, he had a great disposition. As sick as he was, he somehow found the strength to slowly walk into the polling booth with his walker on Election Day 2012 and cast his vote.
He loved the Lord, and as long as his healtl1 allowed, he rarely missed going to church. Throughout his life, he was always active in some capacity at the church, whether it was as a Deacon, Choir Chaperone and Advisor, Committee Member, Leader, Church Officer or some other capacity. He will forever be in our hearts and memones.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Hattie Creecy; three children, Dwayne, Deirdre and Dwight; two stepchildren, Nathan and Reginald; grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
