LIFE STORY
The life of Mrs. Vinnie M. Cox began in Gibson, Georgia on April22, 1924.
She was born to the late William A. Worthen and the late Bertie Rivers (Kitchens) Worthen. She was the first child of this union. After the death of her mother, her father later married Elizabeth Woods. She was preceded in death by her two sisters Fannie and Mildred, two brothers Pete and Jack and most recently her aunt, Sarah Jones.
At the age of 15, her family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she attended Washington High School. As ayoung woman, she met and married the late Alonzo Cox, Jr. From this union, four children were born: Brenda, Linda, Alonzo Ill and Glenda.
At an early age, she joined Piney Grove Baptist Church. She often spoke of learning to read through her father reading his Bible to her. After her family moved to Atlanta, she joined Greater Fellowship Baptist Church, where she served as Financial Secretary as long as the Lord would allow as her health began to deteriorate. She was amember of the T.N. Nelson Gospel Chorus, President of the Willing Workers Committee and amember of the Kitchen Committee.
Sis. Cox worked as ananny for many years. She also worked with disabled children at the Brook Run Hospital. Interacting with children has always brought joy to her life. She would be thrilled to pass out cookies to all of the children after church service.
Her first granddaughter would get "mama and Grandmama" confused,so the name "Sweet Mama" was adopted for Sis. Cox.Thereafter, she was known as Sweet Mama to all who knew her.
As her health further deteriorated, she became a resident of the Douglasville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Douglasville, Georgia. While there, she enjoyed participating in the activities and interacting with aloving and caring staff.
Sis. Vinnie Cox left peacefully on Tuesday April16, 2013 to be with the Lord. She leaves to cherish and honor her memories, one brother Frank Woods (Juanita), one nephew Bobby Ward (Yvonne), four children Brenda Shields (Reginald}, Linda Johnson (Burnes), Alonzo Cox, Ill and Glenda Cox, eight grand-children Tonica, Burell, Terron, Deverick, Kymberli, Kelli, Jermonte', and Marquez, eight great-9randchildren, one great-9reat grandchild, cousin Ruth Graves and a host of other relatives and friends.
