Founder of Dixie Hills Bus Line
Fred Allen Cox, the founder of the Dixie Hills Bus Line, passed on November 20, 1995.
Along with his brother Sigmon, Fred began providing transportation in a station wagon for the population of At Ia nta, residents who were Iivi ng in the section west of the city known as Dixie Hills. Upon acquiring a truck, Mr. Cox was able to provide scheduled service from the corner of
Ashby and Hunter Streets (now M. L. King Drive) to the
Lincoln Country Club. He secured a franchise for the service in 1942 and expanded his fleet to four buses for the local route, and one for charter service. His was among the first African American-owned transportation companies that offered local scheduled and charter service to school, civic and religious groups. The bus line and franchise were sold to the Georgia Power Company in 1952.
Fred was the fourth of five children born to Martha and Allen Cox in Atlanta, Georgia on December 12, 1907. His father Allen and uncle Charles Cox, along with their mother Emily Cox established Cox Brothers Funeral Home, one of Atlanta's first and largest Black-owned undertakers. Cox Brothers Funeral Home is included in the permanent archives of the Herndon Home.
Mr. Cox married the former Annie Martin on June 12, 1927 and to this union four children were born, Fred, Jr., Doris, Willene and Ann. He is survived by his wife of sixtyeight years, Annie M. Cox; children, Fred A. Cox, Jr. and Doris Dearo, both of Atlanta, Georgia, Willene lrby and Ann Parham, both of New York City; brother, Sigmon Cox,
Atlanta; grandsons, Howard L. lrby, Jr. and Derek lrby, New
York City; Johnny E. Parham, Ill, Scottsdale, Arizona; sister-
in-law, Georgia Cox; sons-in-law, Howard L. lrby and
Johnny E. Parham, Jr., New York City, and Mary Ann Laffanette; other relatives and friends.
