Soror(J'ota tEste[Coston
Soror Coston was born in Bethesda, Maryland on April 23, 1958. She was the first child of Reverend Walter and the late Genevieve McDonald. She departed this life to be with the Lord on July 3, 2015. Pota was raised in Elkins, West Virginia where she received her formal education and attended Elkins High School. In 1976, Pota entered Marshall University where she excelled, and in 1981 received her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice. It was during her undergraduate years that she was offered a student co-op position with the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service.
In her years at Marshall she discovered two loves. First her college sweetheart, Bernie, and second her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Pota and Bernie met in 1978 and became inseparable. They were married in 1982, and to this union one son was born. Her love for Delta also began in 1978 at the Theta Omega Chapter at Marshall University. She maintained her membership at every alumnae chapter where she lived in her 6 moves across the country. When she relocated to the Atlanta area she was recruited by members ofthe East Point /College Park Alumnae Chapter and remained an active member.
In 2011, Pota was asked to run for the Tyrone Town Council. She ran unsuccessfully two times with the last effort losing by a mere 6 votes. In 2014, Pota was approached about running for the newly created Fayette County Commission, District 5 seat, and she quickly rose to the challenge. She won the election by a landslide and was sworn in as the first African American elected to the commission in its 194 years ofexistence.
Pota accepted Christ at an early age, and once she moved to the Atlanta area became a member ofElizabeth Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, her husband of 33 years, Bernie; son, Bernard II; special daughter, Dr. Dion Nicole Martin; father, Rev. Walter McDonald (Beverly); brother, Walter McDonald III; brothers-in-law, Robert Coston, Kenneth Coston, Michael Coston (Anitra), Brian Coston (Alisha); sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Coston, Shirley Coston and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, andfriends.
