The Honorable Josephine Holmes Cook was born in Leslie, Georgia on May 8 , 1947 to her loving parents, Mr. R. B. Holmes, Sr. and Mrs. Lucille Johnson Holmes. Judge Cook was reared in Jacksonville, Florida in a close knit Christian family. Josephine graduated from Northwestern High School and received her B.A. degree from Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida. Her master's degree was earned from Georgia State University and she received the Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree from the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the devoted wife of Ruben Cook, the loving mother of two children, Renee and Raynard, and the proud grandmother of Jamar.
A phenomenal woman, Judge Cook had a distinguished professional career which included teaching in public schools, social work, and employment as a very successful insurance agent before entering the legal profession. Judge Cook was in private law practice for several years. She then ran and won an open seat for Judge of the Superior Court of Fulton County, the position she currently held at her untimely demise.
Additionally, Judge Cook was an active member of several civic and community associations. Among them were the Nu Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Leadership Atlanta Class of 1997; the Marion Woods Homeowners' Association, Constitution Committee: the Atlanta Council on Battered Women; and the Woodward Academy Booster and Parents' Club.
Converted at an early age at the First Samuel Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Judge Cook was serious about her, faith in God and worked diligently in the Church. She was a founding and faithful member of Olivet Baptist Church of Christ where she served on the Trustee Board and as the Attorney for the church. Josephine leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted husband, ~uben Cook; two loving children, Renee Holmes of Tallahassee, Florida and Raynard; loving parents, R.B. Holmes, Sr. and Lucille Johnson Holmes of Jacksonville, Florida; and devoted sisters and brothers: Barbara Holmes of Orlando, Florida; R.B. Holmes, Jr., (Gloria) of Tallahassee, Florida; Bettye Holmes Anderson of Atlanta; Deborah Holmes Parnell (Winfred) of Dallas, Texas; Glen Holmes of Dallas, Texas; Ronald Holmes (Constance) of Atlanta; and Sharon Holmes Arnold (Kenneth) of Jacksonville, Florida; one grandchild, Jamar Smith of Tallahassee, Florida; nieces and nephews: John Anderson, Joi Holmes, Winfred Parnell, Wendy Parneii,Tina Holmes, Ashaki Holmes, Stacey Holmes, Shaen Arnold, and Kenneth Arnold, Jr.; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, godchild, other relatives and friends. Josephine Holmes Cook will long be remembered for her sense of pers~verance, justice, courage and positive disposition.
