Charles Frederic Cooke, Ill (more commonly and most affectionately known as "Ricky"),
the first of three children, was born in Lubbock, Texas, on September 3, 1956 to the late Charles Frederic Cooke, Jr., and Vivian Tamplin Cooke. Ricky began a lifetime filled with humor, love, and devotion to people. Ricky obtained his business degree from McPherson College in 1977. Following graduation, Ricky relocated to Atlanta, where he worked for the Atlanta Life Insurance Company and completed his MBA at Georgia State University.
While raised in Lubbock, Texas, Ricky's relationships in Atlanta began early as a result of his father and his future father-in-law's shared affiliation with Atlanta Life. After meeting the former Nancy Mercedes Hill at the National Insurance Convention at the age of eleven, they began developing their very special friendship. Years later, Ricky demonstrated his tenacity and perseverance by convincing her to be his girlfriend and later his wife. Ricky and Nancy were married on December 16, 1978 and are just days short of their 3Q1h wedding anniversary. Nancy gave birth to Charnan Jessica Cooke Scarborough, Esq. and Jonathan Charles Cooke, a recent graduate of the University of Virginia. Next to Nancy, these two were the most important people in Ricky's life.
Ricky was a businessman in every sense. He was a true deal maker and entrepreneur, applying his shrewd judgment, sharp analytical thinking, and financial acumen in the insurance, financial planning, real estate, and investment management arenas. He was Vice-President of Special Markets at Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Vice-President at Carnegie Wealth Management, and also worked with Cateret and AmTrust Mortgage companies. Most recently, Ricky was the National Director of Marketing for the World Leadership Group International.
Known for his humor and great smile, Ricky could always be counted on for the perfect story or joke at every occasion. He made the time to listen, guide, and support everyone's dreams and aspirations, especially young people.
Ricky had the "WOO." He was a genius in Winning Others Over. He created a path for us all to follow: care about others more than you care about yourself, make time to listen to what others are saying, and be present at all times. This is what Ricky did every day; and in his very special way, he made us feel special, unique, and highly valued. He will be tremendously missed; however we know that his strong and unwavering spirit will live on forever.
He was a charter member of the Atlanta Chapter of 100 Black Men ofAmerica, an alum of the 1996 class of Leadership Atlanta; a lifetime member of the National MBAAssociation; and a member of Big Bethel AME Church, where he served on the Class Leaders Council.
In addition to Nancy, Jessica (James), and Jonathan, Ricky leaves to cherish his memory, mother, Vivian Tamplin Cooke; sister, Jaquenette Cooke; brother, Gerald Cooke (Kristin); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jesse and Azira Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Azira and Errol Kendall; five nieces and nephews, Jaiden Cooke, Mark Kendall, John Kendall, Zack Kendall, and Michelle Kendall; godchildren, Yashica Barber Douglas (Chaka), Wesley Jackson, Ill, Carl and Giana Humphrey, and Marcus Myers; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.
