Arthur Lee Sawyer Cooke was the older of two children of the late Frank and Alice Sawyer. Her parents died early in her life and Frederica Finely Burke, her maternal grandmother, nurtured Arthur Lee and her brother, Willie. After completing public school education in Miami, Florida, she graduated from Grady Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia. Later she earned a B.S. degree in Health Education from the Medical College of Virginia followed by a Masters degree in Guidance Counseling from Atlanta University. For thirty-seven years she shared her life with her devoted husband, Blanchard M. Cooke, Sr., who passed in 1982.
Arthur Lee's careers in education and health spanned forty years as she served the community as: hospital nurse, public health nurse in Dade County, Florida and Fulton County, Georgia, teacher-nurse, and guidance counselor and coordinator of Atlanta Public Schools (APS) School Health Services. She was commissioned by Governors George Busbee, Joe Frank Harris and Zell Miller to chair the Governor's Special Council on Family Planning , which she did for five years.
Confirmed in the Catholic Church in 1958, she served on the school board of St. Paul of the Cross, the Parish Council, the Holy Family Hospital Fund Drive Committee, and the Altar and Rosary Society at its inception. Arthur Lee was actively engaged in many organizations. She traveled extensively and often combined vacation with pre-planned visits to health and educational facilities. These experiences made her an adept escort for APS participants in the International Student Exchange Programs in the United Kingdom and Canada. I have only just a minute. Only sixty seconds in it, Forced upon me - can't refuse it Didn't seek it, didn't choose it, But it's up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, Give account if I abuse it. Just a tiny little minute-
But eternity is in it.
