I'm Free
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free: I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found my peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void. Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss; Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow; I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I've savored much; Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and share with me,
God wanted me now; He has set me free.

!}j;tfuMt f)Jf;;'cfU ca1ote, {j!hc. was born on July 15, 1927 in Salisbury, North Carolina, the son of
Beatrice Powell and Giles Cole. His early days as a young boy were spent in Salisbury with his mother and his Aunt Delia Geter, as his mother spent time working in Greensboro, North Carolina. He moved to Greensboro with his mother, and new step father, Henry Mason in the early 1940's and attended James B. Du dley High School. The family became members of United Institu tional Baptist Church in Greensboro, a nd remained active there for nearly three decades. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1946 while still in high school and served in various military outposts, being stationed in Stuttgart, Germany for nearly a year. Mter leaving the army, he returned to Greensboro, completed Dudley High School, and then A&T College, (now North Carolina A&T State University), finishing in 1950, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with his freshman class, despite the time spent in the Army.
Arthur met and married Mabel Devaughn, the love of his life, while at A&T, and they remained married and devoted to each other, for the remainder of his life, nearly 63 years. Out of this union, were born a son, Arthur Jr., and 2 daughters, Valeria Anne and Sibyl Faye. He was a strong, highly involved, and demanding parent with high expectations and high standards and ultimately became the patriarch of a large family who strives to this day to emulate his example of achievement and service.
As a young family man, he worked multiple jobs and became one of the first Mrican Americans in Greensboro to work at the U.S. Post Office. Mter several years there , in 1963, he entered a management training program for the General Services Administration (GSA) and subsequently managed federal office buildings in several cities, including Asheville, Greensboro, Raleigh and Atlanta. In 1968 he was promoted to a position as a regional personnel officer for GSA, ultimately serving as Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) officer for the Southeast Region. While at GSA and later at the Federal Aviation Administration (FHA) he recruited scores of talented African Americans to fill federal jobs that were open to people of color, and women for the first time. He retired from GSA in 1989, after a distinguished career, and continued to interact regularly with GSA colleagues, whom he had recruited and mentored up until the end of his life.
Mter his retirement, Art Cole never looked back. He continued working in the church he and his wife joined shortly after moving to Atlanta-Ben Hill United Methodist Church. He served in many capacities at Ben Hill, including Chair of the Board of Trustees and Expansion Committee. Big Brother Arthur Cole was also very active in the Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and managed their headquarters facility for several years. He and his wife and their friends traveled for fun across the United States to Hawaii, and to South Mrica, and continued traveling to visit family and friends until the end of his life.
On Saturday, June 2, Arthur Cole, Sr. came to the end of his earthly journey. He is survived by his loving wife, Mabel; his son, Arthur Jr. (Margaret); and daughters: Valeria Anne (Ronald) and Sibyl (CJ); grandchildren: Christopher, Thembi, Taj, Jonathan, Jacob, Harold, (and their spouses) Ashley, and Samuel; eleven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless loving neighbors, family, former co-workers, and friends.
