Robbie Louise Boyd was born in Waynesboro , Georgia, the first child of Reverend Robert Louis Boyd and Marie Shumake Boyd , on September 18, 1922. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Augusta and expanded with the birth of Robbie's late brother, Dr. George Felix Boyd , and sister, Annamozel Boyd Byas. Preacher's kids, the Boyd children were raised with a strong faith in God, and a service ethic shaped by an active church life.
On the afternoon of April 26, 2006, Robbie Louise Boyd Clark absented her earthly tent and went to be with the Lord.
Robbie finished Walker Baptist Institute and Paine College High School, the youngest in her class. In 1943, she graduated from Paine College and immediately began graduate work at Howard University, where in 1945 she received a Masters ofArts degree in Home Economics. After advanced study at Cornell University, Robbie joined the faculty of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina . During her tenure as Department Chairperson in Home Economics Education at Bethune Cookman College, Robbie was introduced by Mrs. Mary Mcleod Bethune, a mentor upon whom she often reflected, to Leonard Coy Clark. They married in 1948. Robbie continued her career as Professor of Home Economics at Savannah State College , then Tennessee State University. She also taught in the Nashville public schools.
With her husband "Coy," an electrical engineer and owner of Clark Electrical & Co ., Robbie moved to Atlanta in 1956. It was then that Robbie and Coy joined Friendship Baptist Church . In 1957, they welcomed a cherished baby boy, Leonard C., Jr. , who was to be their only child . Robbie taught in the Atlanta public schools , first at Turner High School (1961-62) , then Harper High School (1963-70) and , finally Fulton High School, where she retired as Chairperson of the Vocational Education Department in 1990.
Retirement did not mean inactivity for Robb ie. She continued to actively serve in numerous professional , service and religiou s organizations. In 1987, Robbie B. Clark was appointed to the Educational Advisory Panel of the Atlanta Gas Light Company, the first minority to serve in this position. She was an active member of international and national home economics associations , the GTEA and NEA. Robb ie was a charter member of Tau Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. During her 50 years of membership at Friendship, Robbie was a member of The Uplifter's Club, The Service Guild, a church school teacher and a church school pianist.
Robbie Louise Boyd Clark leaves to cherish her memory, a beloved son and friend , Leonard C. Clark, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Annamozel (Ulysses) Byas of Macon, Georgia; one nephew, Eric Byas; three nieces, Melanie Byas, LaVerne (Michael) Byas-Smith, and Alisia Byas; four grandnieces and grandnephews; and a host of cousins, former students and colleagues, neighbors and friends.
She leaves us her words of wisdom: "Wherever life leads you, always maintain your faith in God," and her favorite parting phrase, "Don't forget to Pray!!"
