Celebrating Her Life, Dr. Bernice Carter Clarke, May 29, 1950-December 20, 2007

CELEBRATING HER LIFE
MAY 2 9, 1 9 50 - DE C EM B E R 2 0, 2 0 0 7

Strength and dignity clothe her and she laughs at the future. She opens her mouth with wisdom and gentle teaching is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and eats no bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband, too, and he praises her: "Many daughters have done nobly, but you transcend them all." Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing. Acknowledge the product of her hands; let her works praise her in the gates.
- Proverbs 31: 25-31

Bernice 11Niecy" Carter's journey began on May 29, 1950 in Woodland, Georgia when Willie Bishop Carter and Ethel Denson Carter welcomed to their loving home a bouncing baby girl and younger sister for their first-born daughter Inez Carter. Soon to follow to complete this special family were two brothers, Winfred and Michael and one sister Sherry.
At a young age, Bernice developed her love for education as she excelled at Ruth Carter High School in Talbotton County and graduated with honors. She continued her pursuit of academic excellence at Albany State College in Albany, Georgia where she received a Bachelor of Science in Business Education. Shortly thereafter on July 7, 1973, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Morris 0. Clarke. They later welcomed two beautiful daughters, Otanya and Moranne to share in the joy of their union.
While successfully creating a loving and nurturing home for her family, Bernice continued to pursue her passion for educating youth with a commitment to bettering the lives of others. As a professional educator, Bernice strongly believed in the power of knowledge and the importance of learning. She worked diligently at training and teaching others, and sought personal academic success by obtaining advanced education degrees. Throughout her illustrious career, she served as an instructor, school administrator, role model and mentor. Always taking time to give back to her community, she was also a devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and New Life Presbyterian Church.
Above all, Bernice recognized that Jesus Christ was the reason for her success, so she strived to please him in each role. After fulfilling her duties and sharing her talents, she went to join the Lord on December 20,2007. Continuing her legacy are her spouse, Dr. M. 0. Clarke; daughters, Otanya and Moranne Clarke; sisters, Inez Carter Copeland (Willie James) and Sherry Carter; brothers, Winfred Carter (Mary) and Michael Carter Genecia); grandmother, Mae Bell Carter; aunts, Wilene Russell, Bertha Green (John), Laura Taylor, Millie Blount Goshua), Isabelle Huff and Carrie Kersey; uncles, Preston Denson (Barbara), Arthur Denson (Kate), Sgt. Eugene Brooks, James Carter (Barbara), and Jimmie Denson; mother-in-law, Anne Greer Clarke; sister-in-law, Dr. Betty Anne Tinsley (Clifton); brother-in-law, George Allen Clarke; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. All who loved and knew her will remember and cherish her life.
