Rosalie Charles was born in Basseterre, St. Kitts, Indies on November 28, 1919 to jane and Richard

Augustus Pickering.

She attended public schools in Harlem and Julia Richman High School in Manhattan where she majored in secretarial studies.

After the untimely death of her mother during her high school years, Viola assumed responsibility for the upbringing of her brother, sisters, and other relatives.

Viola was married to Joseph Charles and had two daughters, Saundra and Carol.

After working at hotels for many years, Viola began to work as a housekeeper for private families. She retired in the mid 80's and remained at home enjoying one of her favorite pasttimes, reading good books.

Viola was a master in the kitchen. She enjoyed preparing her delicious cuisine for family and friends. Ga-Ga, as she was called by many, enjoyed being surrounded by a cheerful crowd- all having fun and food at her home in Jamaica, New York.

During the early morning hours of September 18, 1995, Viola Rosalie Pickering Charles, departed from this life. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Charles, her grandchildren, Jade We~ks Jenkins and Joseph Weeks, her great-grandchildren, Kenneth Jackson III and Bryan Jenkins, her nephews, Harold Gotha, George Pickering, Vincent Pickering, Richard (Tito) Pickering and her nieces, Joan Gotha Williams and Doris Pickering, her sister-in-law, Marjorie Pickering, her grandson~ in-law, Harold jenkins, a cousin, Leo Bailey and a host of other relatives and friends, notably, the Birminghams, the Lightsys, Roz and Jack Avrett, Alan Forte, John Herbert, and Alice and John Morawetz. Viola, we shall miss you.
