Cynthia Smith Chandler was the first of three girls born to Ralph and Helen Smith in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 2, 1954. Growing up in a Christian home and family, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Bethlehem Church of God Holiness at an early age. In 1982, Cynthia joined the Ben Hill United Methodist Church family.
Cynthia was a student in the Atlanta Public School System. She attended E.R. Carter Elementary School, Washington High School and West Fulton High School. After high school, Cynthia enthusiastically attended Clark College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1976. After completing her undergraduate studies, she continued her education at Atlanta University and received her Masters degree in Library Science in 1977.
Cynthia began her career as a librarian in Dekalb County immediately following the completion of her graduate studies. She worked with the Dekalb County Library System for more than eighteen years. At the time of her homegoing, Cynthia was serving as Senior Librarian--Branch Manager for the Chamblee Library and acting president of the Georgia Black Librarians Caucus. She was also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Library Association and the Georgia Library Association.
On August 17, 1985, Cynthia was united in holy matrimony to her college sweetheart, Mr. Franklin K. Chandler. In addition to her loving husband, Cynthia leaves many family members and friends to mourn and cherish her loving memory, including her parents, Mr. Ralph Smith and Mrs. Helen Smith, of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Smith Price and Ms. Beverly R. Smith, both of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Ms. Yvonne J. Chandler of Denton, Texas; a brother-in-law, Dr. Albenny Price of Atlanta, Georgia; a nephew, Master Alexander J. Price of Atlanta, Georgia; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
