Wellington attended and graduated from Dubois High School in West Virginia in 1946. His love for music led him to pursue academic studies at West Virginia State College, graduating with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1950. He also studied at Marshall University and Georgia State University.

His reputation led the General coming up to the front line just to meet him. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding service during the Korean War.
Following his military career, Wellington returned to the United States to pursue his teaching career in the area of music.
