Last Moments........
.:. On Thanksgiving Day, November 2010, in Darlington, South Carolina, it was a very warm day. I was visiting my parents. After placing the food in the oven and on the stove, I decided to go outside to feel the warm breeze. It was such a beautiful day. As I stood in the yard, my father appeared in the doorway. I watched him as he came outside and sat in the chair on the porch. He is still a tall statue of a man, although his body appeared to be frail. He was diagnosed with bone cancer months earlier. He called me by my nickname, and asked me to sit with him. I went, but I did not sit because I knew I would have to go inside and check the food shortly. As I stood beside him, he looked at me and said, "I am no ways tired." This is an old southern phrase, and sometimes included in old Negro spirituals which I take to mean that I serve and worship the Lord here on earth, and when He comes for me, I will continue to serve and worship Him- No, I am not tired yet. He said this with a smile. Then he looked at me and said, "Take care of Momma when I leave." I tried to reassure him that I and my other siblings would take care of our mother. But I also told him, you aren't going anywhere. I guess I was trying to give him a little hope and myself as well.
As the tears were forming in my eyes, I left him on the porch, and - went back to the kitchen. Shortly afterwards, my father came in and got his jacket. He said to me, "Momma and I are going for a walk." As they left, I decided to go the door to watch them as they (~:;_ walked down the block. He took her by the hand. A few seconds later, he slowly dropped her --~> hand, and hugged her as if he was never going to let her go. I smiled as I watched them. Again, I went back to my cooking. Upon their return to the house, they did not come inside but went to the backyard and sat under the tree. While taking the cancer treatments, his doctor did not want him in the sun. I went to the back door, and watched them as they sat under the tree. They would talk, and then he w~uld: gently touched her hands. My mother would get up and hug him, and then return to her chair. _
They finally came inside and dinner was served. I cannot explain what great joy I experienced on this Thanksgiving day knowing that this would probably be the last Thanksgiving Day I would spend with them as a couple. I got to spend Christmas with them as well. I will cherish these last moments. I know he is somewhere around God's throne singing. He had a great voice. -- Sing Daddy, Sing.
