Reverend Dr. Byron E. Thomas, Senior Pastor Reverend Belinda McCastle, Presiding
Vivian Lynell Brown graced this world on May 1, 1940, born to the late Nathan and Inez Truitt in Hogansville, Georgia. Her sweet spirit left this earth on her mother's birthday, November 10, 2017. At an early age, she became an active member of Springfield Baptist Church until she moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Morris Brown College. After pledging Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated at Morris Brown and earning a Bachelor's Degree in English, Vivian began teaching high school students in Quitman, Georgia in 1962 and then taught junior-high school students in Griffin, Georgia the following year. It was in Griffin where she met her beloved William Brown in 1964; two years later they began life as husband and wife.
Vivian earned a Master's Degree in Library Science from Atlanta University and spent over thirty years in the DeKalb County School System as a Media Specialist at Ashford Park Elementary School. After retiring, she dedicated her life to her famil~ friends and community. She took care of her mother-in-law, Eula Bell Brown, until her death; she continued to support her daughter in her endeavors; she served with the Real Electrifying Divas ofThe Red Hat Society and read to the children of Fickett Elementary School.
In 1973, The Browns joined Ben Hill United Methodist Church and quickly became active. Vivian was a charter member of the Majestic Choir, worked with the United Methodist Women, co-chaired the youth group, taught Vacation Bible School, played in the hand bell choir and
joined Jewels and Partners. Vivian absolutely loved singing alto in the Majestic Choir. She insisted that a member of her family make a cassette recording of the choir's concerts every year for several years. In fact, in recent months, she would often be seen carrying the choir's first album cover from 1980, Prayer & Faith around the house.
Creativity ran through Vivian's veins. There was always a project in the works. Not only did she make clothes for herself and for her daughter, but she also mastered a plethora of arts and crafts, from crocheting, embroidering, drawing, painting, doll-making, draperies, etc. Her vibrancy permeated every aspect of her life and was most evident when met for the first time - for she never met a stranger. She would talk to any and every body with the most beautiful smile. She was thoughtful. She was kind. She was loving and generous. She was a friend to all, a sister to few and a wife and mother to one.
Vivian was preceded in death by a younger brother, Tommy Truitt but leaves to honor her memory a husband of 51 years, William Brown; daughter, Macquelyn Brown; one sister, LaVerne Truitt-Hall; two brothers, Nathan E. Truitt, Jr. and Benny Ray Truitt (Rosalyn); two very special cousins, Eric Truitt and Debra (Eric) Amos. Kesha (Marty), Nate, and Racine (Spergon) will miss their aunt, while Andrea, Antoine and Devyn (Jessica) will miss their cousin. Also left to treasure their time with her are a host of grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews, godgrandchildren, wonderful relatives and friends.
