Sunrise: June 11, 1937 Sunset: February 23, 2016

Shirley Hughes was born in Saint Louis, Missouri to Sylvester Hughes and Josephine De France. She was the eldest of five children and developed her nurturing skills early in life as she cared daily for her siblings while their mother earned a living for the family.
As a student, Shirley loved Math and Reading ancl she was a proud Spelling Bee Champion! As a sweet thirteen-year old, she met Jimmie Brown, an older family friend. Jimmie often treated the entire family to a movie and a trip to the malt shop Everyone enjoyed themselves, although Shirley insisted on seating all of her siblings between them! They kept in touch through family members while Shirley and her family lived abroad. Shirley didn't think of Jimmie often but once she "saw him in that uniform", Cupid's arrow struck! Shortly thereafter, at the age of 17, they married. To this union, four children were born. As a young bride, Shirley utilized her nurturing skills to become a nurse's aide. She later spent countless hours studying to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) during the day and worked at night, all while .. aring for her growing family.
The Brown Family resided in Saint Louis until1973, when they relocated to Atlanta for career advancement. Shirley earned a great deal of respr:ct as she loved, cared for, and blessed patients through her work in pediatrics and dialysis. She was especially proud of her roles as: Director of Nursing in several nursing homes and as Quality P.ssurance Nurse for the state of Georgia. Due to her love for others and her thirst for education, S~ irley returned to school to become an RN. She eventually earned her Master's Degree in Nursing, prior to retiring as a school nurse.
Some of Shirley's favorite leisure activities were (lancing, sewing (she created 15 dresses for her daughter's wedding party), reading, and solving cossword puzzles & word searches. Along with Jimmie, she found great joy in traveling, domestically and abroad. Shirley and Jimmie treasured family time and often took the entire family along fer their favorite vacations of camping and cruising in addition to trips to the park, circus, zoo, carnivals , concerts, etc.
Shirley and Jimmie constructed a firm foundation fc.r the development of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Due to their rigorous work and study schedules, they were often unable to attend many activities for their child :en so they were doting grandparents and attended nearly every recital, sporting event, spe:lking engagement, Honor's Program, and other activity that involved their grandchildren. Shirley e.nd Jimmie continued to dance, travel, and praise the Lord together until his death in 2008.
After being an active member of East Lake Unitecl Methodist Church (UMC) and then Flat Shoals UMC, Shirley joined Global Impact Christian Ministries (GICM) in 2012. She enjoyed learning, praising, singing, and worshipping with her family. The GICM Youth and Dance Ministries were amongst her favorites.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, svteetheart and dance partner, Jimmie; her parents Sylvester and Josephine; and two sisters, June Jotnson and Jeanette Jackson. Left to mourn her passing from this physical realm are her children: Jimmie Brown, Jr. (Malinda); Sherrilynn Brown; Jerome Brown, Sr. (Joyce) and Jacquelyn Phillips (Kevin); ten grandchildren: Aisha L.
