Mysteris Hall Brown was born the fifth child to William Judge and Fannie Lou (Maddox) Hall in Athens, GA. She grew up in a loving home with three brothers (Hamilton, Walter, Russell) and four sisters (Elizabeth, Florrine, Robbie, Elise). Her spiritual growth began at Clark Grove Baptist Church where she sang in the Children' s Choir.
Mysteris was educated in the Athens, Georgia Public School System. She attended Athens Industrial High School, ranking in the top ten percent of her class. She participated in many school activities including basketball, homeroom class representative, chorus, Future Homemakers of America and sewing club. While in high school, she worked part-time as a cashier at GA Theater and modeled for the UGA Art Class.
Mysteris furthered her formal education in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating in 1958 from Blayton Business College where she majored in Accounting. While attending Blayton, she met Clarence L. Brown. They fell in love and were later married. They became proud parents of two lovely and adorable daughters, Angela and Carla.
Mysteris began her working career with Davison' s (now Macy's), Guaranty Life Insurance Company, and Standard Oil Company before joining the Atlanta Public School System in 1967. Her first job with the school system was with the Library Media Processing Center. In 1969, she accepted a job as bookkeeper at L.J. Price High School.
When Mysteris' daughter Angela, attended D. M. Therrell High School, Mrs. Brown was known as one of the most dedicated parents at the school. She became involved in many activities, including being a member of the PTA. Her favorite activities were transporting the cheerleaders to and from basketball games. Because of her dedication and involvement at Therrell High School, the principal offered her a position. In 1977, Mysteris joined Therrell' s staff where she received several recognition awards because of her great work in education.
Mysteris' spiritual growth continued when she joined her husband at West Mitchell African Methodist Episcopal Church. After moving to Atlanta' s Heritage Valley Community, she became a member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church in 1972 under Pastor Paul Wohlgemuth. Under the subsequent leadership of Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson, she was instrumental in forming Ben Hill' s first Ladies' Usher Team. She served on the Administration Board, Social Concerns Committee, United Methodist Women, Children' s Ministry, and Membership and Hospitality Committees. Mysteris was filled with the Holy Spirit and set an example through her sweet spirit and her love for God.
Mysteris loved gardening, reading, decorating and volunteering. She volunteered with the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia, The Pilot Club of Atlanta and Georgia Artists with DisAbilities (GAWD).
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband Clarence Brown; daughters, Angela Brown Gillis (Daniel) and Carla Brown Tatum (Rundy); grandsons, Milz Deran Tatum and Cortlin Elias Tatum; granddaughters, Jaylyn and Campbell Gillis; sisters, Robbie Milner and Elsie Moon; sisters-in-law, Edith Hall, Lou Hall, Claudia Cleveland (Earl) and Pinky Rutledge; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
