Arthur Edward Bronner, Sr. was the seventh of eleven children born to James and Emma Bronner on June 11, 1916 in Kelly, Georgia, which is located 60 miles ofAtlanta in Jasper County.
Born into a business-minded family, Arthur E. Bronner, Sr., along with his brothers and sisters had to divide their dusk to dark schedules between chores on the family farm and school.
Following one of his older brothers, Arthur, moved to Atlanta and worked as a carrier for The Atlanta Daily World Newspaper. Arthur told his brother "I'll do anything to get off this farm ." Arthur and his sibl ings all shared one house as they one by one moved to the big city to better themselves. Arthur served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Before returning to Atlanta, he owned a dry cleaners in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mr. A. E., as was commonly referred to by many, joined his brother, Nathaniel to form Bronner Brothers and sold various black hair care products such as Madam Walker and Apex "door to door". The success they found in the beauty world led them to eventually "put our bags down" and open a beauty supply store on Auburn Avenue. In 1961, they moved to Hunter Street and Ashby, now Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard, where they had two reta il stores, corporate offices and a warehouse.
In between building the business, Mr. A. E. met and married Theodora McKinney (deceased) and had two sons, Arthur E., II (deceased as an infant) and Arthur E., Ill to this union. After the loss of his wife, Mr. A. E. worked smarter not harder and they put more attention to the hair care business than the retial store simply because it was "more money, less work".As the company grew, the locations had to expand to additional retail stores, two manufacturing plants, real estate and corporate headquarters in Cobb County. Not only did Mr. A. E. and Nathaniel build a business selling hair care products, they also built the largest hair show, "The Bronner Brothers International Hair Show" in the country geared to the African-American stylist and barbers. Bronner Brothers has repeatedly been in the Black Enterprise top 100 listing .
In 1971 , Mr. A. E. married Anne Hill Wright. Their marriage lasted thirty-six years until her passing March, 2006. Mr.A. E. had more than his share of challenges in life from having his father's business and home burned by the Ku Klux Klan , two major heart attacks, aneurism and stroke. Mr.A. E. never lost his determination and will to live or sense of humor while encouraging others along the way. Arthur E. Bronner, Sr. outlived all of his siblings, a host of neighbors and classmates whose lives he touched while working his way back home.
Arthur E. Bronner, Sr. is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Arthur E. and Bishop Dr. Brenda L. Bronner, Ill, Norcross, Georgia; four grandchildren, Tamiko L.
