ATime To Be Born
Mrs. Emma Lois Britton (Miss Emma) was born on June 23, 1920 in Conyers, Georgia, Rockdale County, to Mr. James Foster, Sr. and Mrs. Gertrude Elizabeth Reese. She was the last survivor of ten children. On August 11, 1945, Emma joined in Holy Matrimony with Waddell Melvin Britton, Sr. To this union, three children were born, G. Virginia, Rosa L. and Waddell M., Jr.
ATime To Share
At an early age, Miss Emma professed her faith in Jesus Christ by joining New Hope Baptist Church. She allowed God to lay the groundwork for her life's path and later joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend McGuire, where she became Secretary and Treasurer. Upon moving to Scottdale, she joined Chapel First Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend McGuire. There she was a Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer. When her husband, Reverend W. M. Britton, Sr. became pastor of Calvary Grove Baptist Church, she became a member and worked faithfully as a member of the Mother Board, until her home going. She was willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed and often acted as custodian to make sure that the building was clean. She was the epitome of a "First Lady', always dressed to the nines, poised, composed, soft-spoken and caring.
Miss Emma, also known as "the Candy Lady' and "the Hot Sandwich Lady', ran a neighborhood grocery store for more that 50 years and was a shrewd business woman. She always made sure that everyone who entered her store left with something whether they had money or not. She treated everyone with respect and kindness. She would give a sandwich, chips and a drink to the many students who entered without money and tell them to hurry back to school so they would not get into trouble. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and to donate to those in need. She allowed many people to come in out of the elements to get warm and dry. She extended credit to many and didn't badger anyone to pay.
Miss Emma's passions were reading the Bible, especi_ally Psalms (she has read the entire Bible 3 times), working in her yard, baking, sewing (she was a self taught seamstress), painting, tile working, upholstering, and raising her grandchildren. She always had a kind uplifting word no matter who she talked with and she never forgot to mention the goodness of the Lord. One of her favorite saying was, "Just look up to the Lord. " She loved to attend church and would miss services only if she was ill. Upon leaving church, she would say, "Now I've done what the Lord would want me to do." Our Mom kept the family circle tightly closed and taught us that nothing was more important than family.

ATimeToDie

Britton, Sr.; her daughters, G. Virginia Johnson (&son-in-law, William Ed) and Rosa L. Barker (&son-in-law, Eddie Hugh); her son, Waddell M. Britton Jr. (&daughter-in-law, Glenda Faye Britton); her three grandchildren, Antonio M. Barker (LaTondra), Gretchen V. Johnson and Wardrickes M. Britton; her two greatgrandchildren, Ashlyn and Kalyn Barker; her devoted niece, Mrs. Emma L.
