She was a regular at three ofthe historic Charleston Market's Jazz clubs, sang for cruise passengers on the HMS Norway before the NBC Today Show hosts and entertained guests for a decade at the Mills House Hotel's New Years Eve Celebration. Mildred was also hired for ahost ofother political rallies, conventions and charityevents, d1e 300th Celebration ofBerkeley County and has opened for Bobby Blue Bland, Pieces ofA Dream and The BillyTaylorTrio. She was also a featured artist at ilie opening oftheThe Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, SC. In 1957, Mildred was inducted as a member of the Beta Sigma Chapter ofAlpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated on the campus ofSouili Carolina State. She was a charter member ofNu Alpha Omega, ilie Berkeley County Chapter ofthe sorority. Wiiliin the sorority, Mildred held many offices including chapter president and vice president. Mildred was preceded in deaili by her fuilier and a brother, Maurice (Tma). In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by two children, Darryl Brevard (Veronica) ofMoncks Comer and Nicole BrevardHines (Jesse) ofOrangeburg, SC; asister, ShirleyGilmoreTateofGaffuey; two brothers, William P. Gilmore, Jr. (Martha) ofMoncks Corner and H. Singleton Gilmore ofGreer; 2 grandchildren, VaShannon Brevard and Hadyn Hines; sisterand bromer-in-law,Henrietta andArnold Mitchell ofBeaufon,S.C.; nieces, nephews,

A beautiful life came to a close on Sunday, January 6, 2007, in Roper Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina when Mildred Gilmore Brevard passed away. She was born in Notwalk, Connecticut to Mary Singleton Gilmore and William Palmer Gilmore, Sr.
Mildred was a 1957graduate ofGranard High School, GaRney, SC; a 1961 graduate ofSouth Carolina State College, Orangeburg, SC; and in 1976, receivedaMasters ofArts Degree from the Citadel in Charleston, SC. Mildred built a legacy wherever she went. She entered South Carolina State as a 16 year old freshman. While at "State" she was a music education major, a member of the choir, a member of the theatre group the Henderson Davis Players, a member ofthe marching bandwhere shewas a majorette and aflautist. In 196061, she was elected as Miss South Carolina State College and Miss Homecoming. As a result, the college honored herwith a buildingbearingher name.In 1957,Mildred met her beloved HenryW. Brevard, ll at SC State. After marriage the couple moved to Moncks Comer and began building their lives in the Berkeley County community. To this union came two children Darryl and Nicole. In 1961, Mildred became apublicschool music teacher, band director and choral director at Central (Cross) High School. She had the 1st band in Berkeley County to participate in the Governor's Inaugural Parade. After 17 years at Cross High School, she transferred to Berkeley High School as band director. She then relocated to Berkeley Middle School as band director. Continually breaking down barriers, Mildred was accepted into the BerkeleyCounty PrincipalApprentice Program,becoming the 1stwoman in the program. She did her administration apprentice work at Westview Middle School and Whitesville Elementary School, respectively. Subsequently, she was hired as assistant principal at Stratford High School, Goose Creek, SC. After only 2 years at Stratford, the superintendent requested that Mildred be placed at Cross High School as acting principal while afriend recovered from an illness. Shewas then sent back to Stratford to continue her journey as assistant principal. It wasn't long before she was called upon again. Mildred was asked to return to Cross High School as assistant principal, which is where she was given the nickname 'Joetta Clark''-the students said all she was missing was the baseball bat. Upon leaving Cross, she began working as assistant principal at Berkeley High School. Eventually, she made her way back to Stratford where she retired as assistant principal in 1992. After retirement, she continued to serve the students ofBerkeley County. The superintendent named Mildred as the 1st School District Discipline Hearing Officer in the state ofSouth Carolina.In 2003,shewas sent backto Stratford High School as acting Principal until the position was filled. She then returned as hearing officer and held this position until her passing. Mildred was aspirited member ofihe Church ofthe Redeemer Episcopal, Pineville, S.C. where she served in numerous capacities. She was the minister ofmusic, business manager, treasurer, project coordinator and created the bulletins each Sunday. Continuingher love for music, she organized and directed aspecial group of people from several different churches in the area to form the Pineville Chorale. Mildredwas also ajazzvocalistwith Lonnie Hamilton and the Diplomats. Shewas a regular on WCBD-1V 2's Lonnie Hamilton Show in the 60's. In addition to opening the first Piccolo Spoleto Jazz Series and performing at Piccolo Spoleto for several years, her work has been showcased at the Moja Arts Festival; US
