06ituary
Cornell "Sonny Boy" Brayboy, one of nine children, was born to the late Oscar and Drucilla Brayboy on March 2,1935 in Lake City, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by Bernice, Fred, Jessie (JW), William (Billy), Dorothy and Cecil Mae.
After his schooling in the Lake City, South Carolina school district, Cornell joined the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. Before he left for his tour of duty, he met a special young lady, Martha Shannon, who would capture his heart and change his life forever. They were married November 7, 1957.
After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1957 and getting married, Cornell and Martha moved to Brooklyn, New York where they lived until 1978. He worked for Royal Office Supply until it closed in 1977. Keeping their southern roots, they often helped plan family gatherings, baseball games, and outings. They were often looked at as the "Original Love Connection", as they introduced friends who would later form their own unions of marriage. In 1967, they were blessed with a son, Timothy Brayboy.
Cornell and Martha relocated with their son to Atlanta, Georgia and settled in Decatur, Georgia. He took on a job to help build a new transit rail line for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transportation Authority (MARTA) where he worked until 1992. He then switched his career and became employed with Arnold Transportation for 11 years as a tractor trailer driver. As he settled into making Atlanta home, he and Martha joined Thankful Baptist church, where he was baptized in 1982 by Pastor Leon Tucker and would later become a deacon. Cornell settled into retirement in 2005.
Cornell's favorite pastime was fishing and you could find him many a Saturday at one of the area fishing holes. He also loved the game of baseball and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed traveling and of course spending time with family. Cornell had a passion for music and amassed a huge collection of old classic 45's. He was a quiet and very reserved man that said what he meant, and meant what he said.
Cornell was admitted into Dekalb Medical Center on August 9, 2013 and after being given permission to rest, God called him home on September 9, 2013.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Martha; one son, Timothy of Snellville, Georgia; one grandson, Timothy (Brandon); brother, James Brayboy (Shirley) of Baltimore, Maryland; sister, Alice Gaines of Baltimore, Maryland; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
