Bernice Brack consistently gave the precious gift of her presence with her patience, grace, charm and wisdom. She was the essence of positivity, knowledgeable, caring and nurturing. She competently, efficiently and so pleasantly attended to her daily responsibilities at the Society of American Archivists (SAA).
Her warm greetings when contacting the SAA office always made the experience of SAA more welcoming. Bernice's seeds of kindness made you feel as though you really mattered and had a personal relationship, that you were significant to the SAA family.
Perhaps one of the best evidence of Bernice's commitment is the longevity of her service to the Society of American Archivists. She rendered almost a quarter century of service to numerous administrations. Bernice was a complement and stabilizing force of continuity for many at the forefront of leadership in the organization. She provided a priceless gift that symbolized h~r strength. Bernice's mentoring and nurturing of hundreds of archivists has left an indelible mark on the archival world.
Bernice's passing is a time that calls many of us to a period of reflection. We remember fondly her legacy of friendship and excellence of service. She was adept at brightening one's perspective of the day. For me, Bernice was the core of the soul of SAA. If she did not have the answer, she would pleasantly direct you to the resources needed. The value of friendship and perseverance has certainly been reflected in the life and work of Bernice Brack.
Again, let us salute Bernice and pledge to document her work and cherish her legacy. She was an incredible personality who will be missed by her children, family, friends and the SAA family as well, because indeed Bernice made a difference by living graciously and with integrity. She leaves a vibrant and brilliant legacy withher gifts of friendliness, coffimitment and compassion. Perhaps we can find some solace in our memories and in knowing that Bernice's vivacity and resplendence has enhanced and made a difference for hundreds of archives and archivists. Such is the wondrous gift she leaves us. I will endeavor to document that.
THE EVERLASTING LIGHT
Those we love must someday pass beyond our present sight ... Must leave us
and the world we know without their radiant light
But we know that like a candle their lovely light will shine
to brighten up another place more perfect... more divine
And in the realm of Heaven where they shine so warm and bright, Our loved ones live forevermore In God's eternal light.
