The late Mattie Bell (Harris) Bens was born July 9, 1924 to the late Mr. & Mrs. Andrew (Sallie Lovett) Harris, Jr. in Gay, Georgia. She was the youngest and last living sibling of 13 children.
Mattie Bell attended school in the Meriweather County School System and later pursued employment in the medical field as a private nursing assistant.
As a young lady, Mattie gave birth to her only child ,Willie Melvin Simpson whom she loved and admired dearly.
In her early twenties, Mattie left Georgia and moved to Florida with one of her older sisters and remained there for over forty years. While in Florida, Mattie Bell found the love of her life, Mr. Sammie Bens. They were joined in holy matrimony in 1970 . God also blessed their marriage with two step daughters Lina Jean and Anita joining in this union.
Mattie and Sammie moved their re!iidence back to Georgia and joined Little Rock Baptist Church under the pastoral guidance of Dr. R. J. Johnson. At Little Rock, Mattie served on the Mother's Board along with her elder sister Mother Leola Hall. Later in years, Mattie joined Lindsay Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Anthony Motley and remained as a faithful member until her death. She truly believed in giving back the financial blessing to God.
Mattie was truly a sweetheart and brought joy to everyone that she came in contact with. She shared such a be~ utiful smile and the grandest sound of laughter. She was truly loved by her family and more noticed for the affection she gave to her nieces and nephews.
She departed her earthly life on Thursday morning, July 2, 2014.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memories a loving husband of 44 years Sammie Bens; one son, Willie Melvin (Winifred) Simpson; two step daughters, Linda Jean Gunn and Anita Chamblee; two grand daughters, Mr. & Mrs. Carlos (Nicole) Brown and Ms. Rita Bronson; three great-grand children, four great, great grand children, a devoted niece (caregiver) Dorothy Lee Jackson and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephe~s and friends.
