OBITUARY
The Honorable Lorenzo Benn, native of Atlanta, born September 11, 1934, to Lilla Merriweather and Legree Benn, died June 2, 1990. He is survived by two sons, Lawrence and Lorenzo Benn, Jr., of Atlanta; one daughter, Marian Benn of New Jersey; two sisters, Grace Jenkins and Eloise Poldo, and two brothers, LeRoy and Norman Benn, all of Atlanta.
He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta, where he served in many capacities.
Representative Benn received his B.A., B.S., L.L.B., and Doctor of Jurisprudence from the following colleges: Kerpel & Long Island University (New York), Iowa University, University of Pennsylvania, and Atlanta Law School. He was a hardworking businessman, which inspired him to become President of Benn Enterprises and L.B.J., Inc.
State Representative Lorenzo Benn was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1980. He served on the following Committees: Banks and Banking, Interstate Cooperation, Rules, and was Secretary of Special Judiciary, and Chairman of the House Youth and Children Subcommittee. Representative Benn also served as Chairman of the Fulton County House Delegation for the past six years.
He was highly respected and well-liked by his colleagues and members of the Legislative staff. He was known to be a man of integrity, soft spoken, articulate and effective.
Representative Benn was a member of the Education Committee for four years and a staunch advocate for quality education and teachers.
Representative Benn's Legislative interests were diverse. He sponsored many major pieces of legislation to enhance the quality of life for residents of Atlanta, Fulton County and Georgia, including the Fair Housing Bill, Staggered tags, Registration, Towing, Emission inspection fees, Employee record checks for Daycare Centers, Election of Fulton County Board of Education, and Homestead exemptions for the elderly and disabled.
Representative Benn received numerous awards for his outstanding service and dedication to the community and the legislature. He was Vice President of the Atlanta Branch of NAACP, President of Nu Beta Epsilon National Law Fraternity, Chairman of Forward Georgia Assembly, member of Georgia's Mental Health Advisory Council, member of the Board of Exodus and member of the Advisory Board of Street Academy.
