Life Reflections

Bernice Jean West Baul was born October 30, 1933 in Muskogee, OK to the late L. C. and Annie Mae Thompson. She was the youngest of three children.
Bernice accepted Christ at the age of twelve, and was baptized and became a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Muskogee Ok where she played piano for the Junior Choir and the BTU. She was paid $3 per week, which she thought was big money. She was called the church baby at Calvary.
She attended Manual High School and Langston University in Langston, OK where she majored in music and pledged AKA (Alpha Kapa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) She also studied Nursing at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS.
She married Wilburn West and to this union, they were blessed with five children. While in Wichita, KS she played piano for the Gospel Silverstone's
Later she moved to Chicago where she fell in love with the late Robert L. Saul and were united in holy matrimony in 1977. While in Chicago she played the piano for churches there and worked in the Ortho Clinic for the University of Illinois. In the early 1980s she moved to College Park, GA and joined the Union Grove Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. William L. Brown, Rev. Michael A. Pace and Rev. John D. Menefee where she served in the music ministry playing the piano and directing the Male Chorus and the Gospel Choir. She was also head of Christian Education Ministry.
Mrs. Baul was also an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and worked in the medical field for over 21 years. She worked in the practice of Dr. Clifford Roberson as medical assistant and Dr. Velvet McDonough as office manager.
She later joined Christian for Change Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Michael Baldwin where she served as the Minister of Music, and a part of the Courtesy Guild and the Finance Committee. Bernice loved to bowl and was involved in the bowling league while at Christian for change. She later moved to McDonough and joined the Shiloh Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. E. W. Lee where she served until her health began to decline. At Shiloh she sang in the Mass choir and served as a greeter. She also served, as chaplain of the Wisdom of Ages. She also volunteered in the Food Pantry and was a member of the Red Hatters.
She leaves to cherish her memories four children: Rev. Ronnie (Carol) West, Gerald West, Berlinda (Michael) Tucker and Damita (Rev. Fredrick) Cowser; twenty grandchildren, over twenty great grandchildren and a host of other relatives, church family and friends.
One brother, Leroy C. Thompson and one sister Lula Mae Thompson Bell preceded her in death. Her son Jay Lawrence West preceded her in death, as well.
