OBITUARY
Brother John E. Barnes, Jr. was born in Porters, Alabama on October 28, 1937. His parents, John E. Barnes and Eula Barnes preceded him in death. He was raised in Birmingham and was one (1) of ten (10) children. Siblings, Bennie Barnes, Lorene Larkins, Esther Pennick, Jimmie Lee Barnes, and Gladys Barnes also preceded him in death. He attended the public schools of Birmingham and graduated from Western-Olin High School in Birmingham. John' s interest in the human body resulted in his further matriculation at Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science. He was an avid health enthusiast as evidenced by his eating habits and jogging and walking regiments.
Subsequently, John donated his organs for transplant and his body to the Emory University School of Medicine for medical teachings and research.
John was blessed with four (4) children: Tracey, Dexter, LaSonya, and Stephanie. The joys of his life were his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
As John often told anyone who would listen, he found the love of his life, Ardell. Their short life together was nothing short of a fairy tale. John and Ardell met at Christians for Change Baptist Church. He was determined to make her his wife from the first time he saw her. He was very strategic in his approach to her. They had a year -long courtship and were married on Saturday, April 10, 2010. They spent a wonderful honeymoon in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Ardell's children, Darrell and Kevin Walcott and their families loved, respected and spent countless hours with them.
Many people were not aware that John had a fantastic singing voice. Members of the church would often tum around to determine who was singing. John briefly sang in the Men's Choir until his health began to fail. He found pleasure in assisting with devotional services. He also served on the Nominating Committee. At a church where John previously served, he was on the Deacon Board. John was very sentimental. He produced a short episode of a poem that honored mothers last year on Mother's Day. His many talents were largely undiscovered because; he was primarily a modest man.
John E. Barnes, Jr. made his transition on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, leaving to cherish wonderful and precious memories: his loving and devoted wife, Ardell W. Barnes, who stayed by his side until the very end; children, Tracey Barnes and Dexter Barnes of Charlotte, North Carolina, LaSonya Jemison of Birmingham, Alabama and Dr. Stephanie Barnes of Hackensack, New Jersey; siblings, Betty Williams and Leroy Barnes of Birmingham, Alabama and Dorothy Barnes of Cleveland, Ohio; one aunt, Annie Mitchell of Detroit, Michigan; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
