Hue Van Ball transitioned to his new heavenly home on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. He died peacefully surrounded by his family. Van was born on May 21, 1952 to the late Sam and Mable Ball of Piedmont, Alabama. He was the thirteenth child born to this union. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, three brothers- Hubert, James Howard and Aaron Ball, four sisters - Glenda Kaye, Mable Faye, Mildred and Nevelyn Ball.
Van graduated from Piedmont High School in 1970 and attended Morehouse College. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in Ma 1974. While matriculating at Morehouse, he joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. At Morehouse College (Chi Chapter), he was dean of pledges and treasurer. He activated Gamma Theta Chapter and got it chartered at the Interdenominational Theological Center. Brother Ball was a member of Lambda Sigma Chapter for almost 40 years and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for 44 years. He was an active and financial member all of those years. As an alumni member, he was a Life Member and a member of the honor group, Outstanding Sigmas of the Southern Region. He served as the group's treasurer and was the first Georgia State Coordinator of the Fraternity's program with the March of Dimes. He was the State of Georgia First Vice Director and State Director on two occasions.. He was also one of the co-founders of the Joint Georgia State Sigma Zeta Conference.
While working with the Fulton Count Juvenile Correction and Child Treatment Cente_r, he met and married Mary Ball and celebrated 20 years of marriage.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mary Ball; his granddaughter, Gabrielle Miller; four bonus children, Kimberly Miller, LuWana McVayConway (Deon), Cleon Miller (Jennifer), and Brian Swanson; five siblings, Imagine Stitts, Piedmont, Alabama, Evelyn Norman, Atlanta, Georgia, Samuel Walker (Johnnie Mae), Atlanta, Georgia, Walter Frank, Westbury, New York, and Robert Lee Ball, Piedmont, Alabama; five sisters-in-law, Phyllis Cooper, Atlanta, Georgia, Dinah Wilson, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lisa Shumate, Diane Lee, and Donna McGowen, Detroit, Michigan; ten grandchildren; one aunt, Henrietta Alexander, Meadville, Pennsylvania; childhood friends, Bobby Spear and Miles Palmore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
