Acl~nowledgment
The family wishes to thank, with deep appreciation, everyone for their expressions of kindness, words of comfort, prayers, and other acts of support shown to us during Mom's illness and at this time of bereavement. We especially appreciate the members of Harmony: Atlanta's International Youth Chorus and their director, Mrs. Joyce Carr McDonald for traveling to provide us with special music. Mrs. Bailey really enjoyed your singing very much and wanted you to participate in this celebration. To the members of St. Paul, we say, "Thank you very much for opening your doors and arms to us." May the Lord bless and keep each of you.

I Surrender All
All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live.
All to Jesus I surrender, humbly at His feet I bow; Worldly pleasures all forsaken, Take me Jesus, take me now.
All to Jesus I surrender, Make me, Savior, wholly thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit Truly know that' Thou art mine.
All to Jesus I surrender, Lord, I give my self to thee; Fill me with Thy love and power; Let Thy blessings fall on me.
I surrender all, (I surrender all,) I surrender all, (I surrender all,) All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

The Life Of Our Mom
~~
Our mother, Maria McMillan Bailey, was born in Bibb County on May 28, 1931. Her parents were the late Mr. Louis Dewitt McMillan and Mrs. Maria Dixon McMillan. Mom was the youngest of seven children and her six siblings predeceased her. She believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Therefore, at an early age, she joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church.
Obtaining an education was important to Mom. She was very proud of the fact that she graduated in the last class at Hudson High School. Further, she martriculated at Savannah State University. Though Mom did not complete her college work, she encouraged her children and grandchildren to do so and was always happy to be among those who, witnessed the awarding of the degree. She also encouraged other young people, and as often as possible, she attended their graduations. When she could not make the drives alone anymore, she arranged to attend with a family member of the student or she convinced one of us that the occasion was important enough for us to take her. For one graduation, she flew to California, even though her preference was to drive.
Mom served as the main pianist, organist, or choir director at numerous churches in the city for many years. Her natural ability coupled with formal piano and organ training made her one of the most sought after choir directors in the city. While we were growing up, she often played at a different church each Sunday. She trained groups of singers ranging from toddlers to adults.
Mom's love for children led her to work in a day care center. Her special talents became apparent and she was asked to teach as well as coordinate the music and artistic programs for the children. Because she was also a seamstress, her responsibilities included designing and making costumes for plays and skits.

This experience equipped her with teaching techniques that she used to help develop our reading and arithmetic proficiencies.
She prided herself in fluently reciting the alphabets in reverse order as an intellectual activity and encouraged us to do the same.
In 1994 Mom retired as an instrument repairperson from Robins Air Force Base. During her twenty five years of service, she took advantage of the many opportunities to acquire more skills. For her excellent work habits, her productivity, and her ability to stay healthy, she received several awards.
After an extended illness that drained her of the energy that she used to teach, motivate, and scold us when necessary, Mom joined her Lord and Savior early Thursday morning, August 26, 2004. As usual, she did it her way.
Mom leaves to celebrate her life and legacy: two daughters, Alice M. (Roosevelt) Simpkins of Trenton, SC and Gwendolyn M. (Emmett) Johnson of Atlanta, GA; one son, Marvin H. Bailey, Sr. of Macon, GA; five grandchildren, Terrence R. Simpkins of Stone Mountain, GA, Emmett D. Johnson, Jr. of San Ramon, CA, Tiffany N. Johnson of Ridgefield Park, NJ, Marvin H. Bailey, Jr. and Ivory A. Bailey of Macon, GA;one great granddaughter, Kayla N. Myers of Conway, SC; seven nieces and nephews, Charles Irvin and Willie H. Irvin both of Macon, GA, Kenneth E. (Rotraut) McMillan of Germany, Marion (Rosalind) McMillan, Jr. of Macon, GA, Michael McMillan of Chicago, IL, Naomi M. (William) Fennell of Woodbridge, VA and Karen P. McMillan of Arlington, VA; one sisterin-law, Clara McMillan; one devoted cousin, James A. Dixon, Jr.; a special friend,Lucille Harris; and a host of great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
" May the work she did speak for her." We loved you Mom, but we know how tired you were. Be at peace now!
Alice, Gwen and Marvin
