IN LOVING MEMORY OF
~Q?.@m!j
Emma K. Bailey was born July 1, 1928 to Lester Smith and Ossie Gaither Smith in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1947. In 1950, she joined in holy matrimony to Robert Bailey and from this union came four children.
Emma Bailey is survived by her four children, Deborah Poole, Gerald Bailey (married to Margaret Bailey), Edwin "Keith" Bailey, and Brent Bailey (married to Stephanie Bailey); six grandchildren, Tracye Poole, Michael Bailey, Brandye Poole, Jessica Bailey, Alexis Simon, and Lauren Bailey; great-grandson, Maddox Poole; sister, Juanita "Nete" Minnifield; and a host of other relatives and friends.
JusT A FEW WORDS ABOUT EMMA
I hope the folks reading this will understand just how much Emma K. Bailey was loved and will be missed. Everyone who met her remembered her. She was all turquoise and yellow, with nails that always looked like summer. She was 88 when she left this world, but she wasn't nobody's blue-haired Nana. No, that auburn crown she wore loved big hats. She wore those hats like tiaras so she could tilt them towards her face and stare underneath with sass.
If you spoke to Emma K. Bailey, then you knew that she swelled speaking about the love in her life. Her mouth stayed full with the sweet taste of her children's accomplishments. If you didn't know about Deborah's law degree, Gerald's masters in theology, Keith's masters in music, or Brent's masters in public administration-then you never met Emma. If you did meet her, you knew never to talk bad about her children or grandchildren in front of her. "Blood thicker than water!" she would say, and then she would tell you about yourself in a way only proud, black mothers know how to do.
Besides the love of her family, nobody could ever question the love she had for God and her church. She was a Christian woman who blanketed everyone she loved in prayer. Emma is enjoying the best part of Heaven right now, as she always lived her life in service of the Lord.
We loved her. We'll miss her. We'll laugh when we think of her joy. We'll sit when we recognize there's silence where there should be her laughter. We'll look over, when we see where she's been. We'll pause, because we won't see Emma until we take our own rest. But nobody should be sad to see her go, because like the flowers she loved so much, Emma grew through this earth on her own terms. She was bright, beautiful, independent and true to herself until her last day.
