Clarence Bailey, Jr. was born in Macon County, Georgia on November 23, 1941 to the late Clarence Bailey, Sr. and Fairy Lee Bailey. The oldest of two children, he was raised in a farming community, where he learned at a young age the discipline of hard-work. It was through years of laboring in the fields of South Georgia that Mr. Bailey developed his long-time passion for gardening.
Mr. Bailey graduated from the segregated, D.F. Douglas High School in Macon County where he played forward for the school basketball team. Years later, he obtained a Technical- Associate's Degree from Georgia Perimeter College. It was while Mr. Bailey was employed at Georgia Tech in its maintenance division where at the University dining hall he met his late-wife, Mrs. Jennie Mae. They were married for 47 years and together raised their only daughter, Maxine.
Mr. Bailey was a proud retiree from the General Motors Company where he was employed for over 35 years. He rose to ranks of Supervisor where he managed the fulfillment of dealer orders on a nightly basis. Mr. Bailey could be assigned anywhere in the plant because of his knowledge of the entire operation. He was one of the first African-Americans in a leadership position at the Doraville location.
Mr. Bailey was a long-time member of Ben Hill United Church where he joined in 1973, and was a loyal member of the Men's Usher Board and Finance Committee. Second to his love for the Lord and his family, was his love for his garden. Though Mr. Bailey served as landscaper and "yard-man" for many families through the years, meticulously cutting lawns with his top-of-the-line mowers, his best work may have been reserved for his own back-yard mini-field. Friends, family and neighbors all awaited the one-of-akind vegetables that Mr. Bailey cultivated each season in his yard. He took pride in pulling out his hedge-clippers to cut the large vegetables to place in the over-sized trash bags.
Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He
leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Mrs. Maxine 0ohnny)
White; his brother, Mr. Billy Goyce) Bailey; granddaughters, Milicent, Muriel, and Leslie; five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends.
