Leonard Courtney Archer, the third son of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Archer, was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 17, 1911. He received his early education at Morehouse Academy and his undergraduate ti-aining at Morehouse College, where his father was president. He later received the Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Speech and Theatre from the Ohio State University.
In 1940, Doctor Archer was married to the former Miss Alice Durham, to which union was born a daughter, Alice Lenore, who died at the age of nine.
During a long and distinguished professional career, Doctor Archer taught English and dramatics in Georgia, Mississippi, and Arkansas, and held the chairmanship of the Department of Speech and Drama at Central State College, Wilberforce. Ohio. In 1958, hejoined the Departments of English and Speech and Drama at Tennessee State University, where he served faithfully until his death.
Doctor Archer was author of numerous short stories, poems, and plays, and only last fall was acclaimed upon the publication of his book, Black Images in the American Theatre.
Since his move to Nash\ille, Doctor Archer has been a member of The First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill and a proud member of the Choir. He also held membership in the American Educational Theatre As~ociation, College English Association, Delta Psi Omega, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Doctor Archer passed on Friday, January 18, 1974, leaving as survivors his devoted wife, two brothers, Mr. Samuel Howard Archer, Jr. and Mr. Nelson Thomas Archer, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Thelma Archer, all of Atlanta; and devoted cousins, Mr. and Mrs. John Clayton, Bronx, N.Y. and Mr. and Mrs. Quitman Williams, Belmar, New Jersey.
