Herbert Jerome Anderson, Sr. was born to the late Willard Lawrence and Beatrice (nee Barrow) Anderson on Christmas Day, December 25, 1928, in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Weighing almost 13 pounds, he was the fifth of five sons born to that union. Herbert was an excellent student and was salutatorian of the first graduating class of Afton Villa High School in West Feliciana parish .
He matriculated at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA and graduated, in 1955, with honors in Elementary Education and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. His early career in education encompassed elementary school teacher, department chair, and school principal. He later earned a Master's Degree and a Specialist Degree in Education in 1968.
Not only was he active in his Christian faith and profession as an educator, but was also heavily involved in the civil rights movement and integrated LSU-Baton Rouge in 1955, after implementation of the Brown v Board of Education Supreme Court decision . As a result of his involvement, a sniper wounded him, and he carried those bullets in his body for the rest of his life . Undeterred by an attempted assassination, he became a member of the Civil Rights Commission, Human Relations Council, NAACP, Boy Scouts (Master), Prince Hall Free & Accepted Masons, and several other civic, social and educational organizations. In addition, he provided active leadership for the peaceful desegregation of the schools, colleges, cit y council, housing and othe r civic inst itution s in St. Tammany pa rish during the 1960s.
An oppo rtunity for personal and professional advancement caused him to move his fam ily to Atlanta, GA in 1971 and, ever a spiritual activist, joined Ben Hill United Methodist Church the same year. He became a member of the Ben Hill United Methodist Men organization, receiving several awards and certificates for his work and leadership within the association, and actively supported his wife and children in their areas of church work.
He became employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Civil Rights Specialist for the Southern Region from 1971-1978, receiving several commendations for his work. He, subsequently, transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services (United States Office of Civil Rights) as an Equal Opportunity Manager where he provided technical assistance and negotiated compl iance with the jurisdictional mandates of the Office for Civil Rights, rece iving commendations from the states of Mississipp i and Ten nessee for his contri butions. He reti red f rom the Department of Health and Human Services in 1995.
It was also during his years with DHHS that he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (Eta Lambda Chapter) in 1985, acting as an active member on several task forces and committees such as Brother's Keeper, Father/Son Breakfast functions, Southeastern Regional Representative, and chapter representative to several national Alpha conventions. It is worth noting that he was especially adept at mentoring young Alpha men.
Herbert Jerome Anderson, Sr. was a proud husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle who loved, respected, protected and provided for those under his care . He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Bernice M. Anderson ; children Dr. Ajile Anderson -Rahman , Herbert Jerome Anderson, Jr. (Deborah), Charles Anderson (Yvonne), Rosalind Anderson -Austin (Juan), Judge Jimmie Benton (Pat) and Kelvin Taylor, II (Tammy); 17 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; nieces Dyvar Anderson, Katherine Primus, Delores Negbenenor; and a host of relatives and friends.
