Description
Scrapbook documenting the establishment of the Rabun County Maternity Home in Clayton, Georgia. The midwifery home, which was opened by registered nurse and certified nurse-midwife Josephine (Jo) Kinman Brewer and Dr. James Allen Green (1882-1948) on November 20, 1942, is thought to be the first such health center organized under a local-state public health nurse and nurse-midwife. The maternity home largely treated poor white women living in rural Appalachia. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, patient and infant photographs, copies of relevant publications, and typescript histories of the home and its staff written by Ms. Brewer. Digitization of this collection is a project of the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, in association with Rabun County Public Library. The project is supported with federal LSTA funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For more information, please visit georgialibraries.org/archival-services.
