Description
The University of Georgia Literary Societies collection consists of records dating from 1854 to 1880 from the Demosthenian Literary Society and the Phi Kappa Literary Society. The Demosthenian Literary Society was formed in 1803 by the first graduating class of the Franklin College, making it the oldest student organization at the University of Georgia. Demosthenian's rival debate organization, the Phi Kappa Literary Society formed in 1820. Both societies are still active on campus and engage in a lively intersociety debate annually.
