Description
Born in Modesto, California in 1913, poet and filmmaker James Broughton wrote 23 books and produced 23 films throughout his life. Part of the creative San Francisco scene from the 1940s to 1980s, he is considered by many to be the father of West Coast experimental filmmaking. Broughton taught artistic ritual at San Francisco University and San Francisco Art Institute, and developed a great following among his students. One of those students, Joel Singer, became Broughton's muse, and remained his soulmate, husband, and creative partner from 1975 to the end of his life in 1999., Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton chronicles the artist's idiosyncratic life and groundbreaking work. Enhanced by materials donated by Big Joy's producer and Director, Stephen Silha, the digital collection includes the interviews used for the film, other film-related resources, and records about Broughton that have been donated by others. It also includes footage of events hosted by Georgia State University to honor Broughton's 100th birthday (November 10, 2013).
