Description
This collection documents the activities of some of the various programs administered by the Works Progress Administration in Georgia. Series one includes photographs of buildings and streets in rural and urban Georgia communities constructed under the program, as well as images of larger work projects such as the renovation of Atlanta's sewer system. The next series consists of images of classes and classrooms utilized for educational programs for adults and children throughout the state. Series three is comprised of photographs of the rural community of Pine Mountain Valley, GA, the site of a rural-industrial community funded by the WPA. The final series includes images of President Franklin Roosevelt, and Gay Shepperson., Gay Bolling Shepperson (1887 - 1977) came to Georgia from Virginia where she headed the children's bureau of the Virginia State Department of Welfare from 1923 from 1928. In Georgia she became administrator for three successive federal relief projects-the Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Works Progress Administration, renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1937, was the federal agency responsible for administrating relief programs during the New Deal. Shepperson was the only female to serve as a state administrator for the WPA during the New Deal. She resigned her post in 1939.
