Description
Papers belonging to Henry Newton, a Presbyterian preacher raised in Athens who graduated from the University of Georgia in 1841 and the Columbia Theological Seminary in 1845. He served numerous Northeast Georgian churches from 1845-1897. Inside this collection is a sermon register volume, as well as a register embedded within the account book containing a listing of sermons preached (1863-1866) before multiple enslaved and emancipated audiences of African Americans with location details. There are also writings that document early sympathies shown for the theory of evolution within a religious setting, tensions over the question of slavery mounting within the Presbyterian Church, and economic and social conditions throughout Georgia, especially Jackson, Hall, and Clarke counties.
