Description
These volumes are the recorded copy of official trademarks and union labels of goods sold or distributed in Georgia and represent their registration with the State of Georgia, 1894-1959. Included are early trademarks and logos of many familiar products such as Coca-Cola, Goodyear, Listerine, Canada Dry, Palmolive, Walgreen, Wonder Bread, Chanel No. 5, RCA, Dr. Scholl's, Wheaties, Amoco, Snickers, Pyrex, Betty Crocker, and Krispy Kreme. In 1893, Georgia passed a law which protected from counterfeiting official trademarks and union labels, which are used primarily in advertising and product branding. Persons, associations or unions that had adopted a trademark or label could register it with the Secretary of State by submitting two copies or facimiles and receiving a certificate of record from the Secretary of State's Office. The certificate of record served as legal proof of adoption in lawsuits and prosecutions within the state. Companies doing business in Georgia registered their trademarks and labels with the Secretary of State as their only legal protection against counterfeiting within the state until the passage of the Lanham Act by the United States Congress in 1946 provided them with protection nationwide.
