Description
This collection consists of photographs collected by Lamar Q. Ball for his multivolume history of World War II in Georgia. Only one volume of this history, Georgia in World War II: A Study of the Military and Civilian, vol. I, 1939, was published. These photographs date from 1934 to 1945., Lamar Q. Ball worked as a reporter for the Atlanta Constitution in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1946, Georgia Governor Ellis Arnall appointed him World War Historian and commissioned him to write a multi-volume history of World War II in Georgia. Only one volume of this history, Georgia in World War II: A Study of the Military and Civilian Effort, vol. I, 1939, was published. In researching his history, Ball gathered a collection of reference material and photographs from a wide variety of sources, which he arranged by subject. His research collection was eventually transferred to the Georgia Archives. A large selection of photographs from the collection is presented here which cover many aspects of both the military effort and the home front in Georgia from roughly 1939 to 1945. Topics covered by the photographs include Fort Benning including its infantry and parachute schools; The American Red Cross; Georgia Tech's Naval ROTC program; Souther Field; Fort McPherson; Fourth Service Command; President Roosevelt (who had close ties in Georgia through the Warm Springs Foundation); Induction; Military training; War production; Ship building; Rationing, conservation and shortages; Fashion; Wartime weddings; Recovery and rehabilitation of wounded soldiers; Entertainment; War bond rallies; Blood drives; and Military training grounds at Toccoa. Ball's collection includes photographs from the European and Pacific Theaters, some of which include subjects from Georgia. He also had access to captured German photographs and postcards. The captions of these have been translated and are included in this online collection.
