- Description:
- This folder consists primarily of notes and lists of residents of Precinct 8 in Meridian, Mississippi, during the summer of 1964. Among these notes, however, are COFO reports on the state of the precinct leadership and organization. It is noted by COFO that Precinct 8 has many active volunteers and registered voters as James Chaney had belonged to this precinct before his murder earlier that summer. Also noted is the support of Reverend R.S. Porter, Reverend Turnipseed and the success of community organizers Leona Griggs and Sarah Graham. Notes detail the lack of turn out from the southern side of the precinct and chart plans to expand organization south. Handwritten notes, presumably from canvassing door-to-door, detail many residents' interest in registration or problems encountered in trying to register. Also included are hand drawn maps of the precinct boundaries and notes on potential polling places.
