Description:
President Richard Powell, (First President, 1913-1933) was hired to oversee the creation of the school in 1911 and served as President of the college for its first 20 years. He had a background in teacher training and had taught in colleges from Georgia to New Mexico. This inspired his choice of the "Spanish Mission" architecture that still defines the school. His early challenges included facing a shortage of funds and countering the popular belief that "girls can be educated more cheaply than boys." SGSNC grew successfully in its nine years of existence. 1918 brought new challenges to SGSNC: both Powell and the students were very active in war work during World War I, with President Powell taking a leave of absence to head up Red Cross activities in the southeast. The school weathered the 1918 Flu epidemic that same year--although it had to close briefly.
