- Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Rural [276] South Brooks County - almost on Fla. line, Valdosta, Ga. December 1980. Small Greek revival house. Rectangular plan. Gabled tin roof. Shed porch. Square posts. Clapboard siding. Sash windows with 6/6 lights. Exterior chimney. Transom over door. Outside stairway at left. The old Radford home, located in the southern part of this county, is in the Nankin Community. It has been known for many years as a home for its warm southern hospitability. This house was built at the beginning of the War Between the States. A man having a portable sawmill was building this house when he had to go fight in the War. He used a sharp pointed instrument to scratch the date, E. Sept. 15, 1861, on the pantry door. The door is still used in the old house. Henry Radford and his wife, Nancy, obtained the house and land, and their son, William E. Radford. After the death of his son, A. J. Radford, he gave the home to his grandson, Will Radford, who is the present owner. The original land grants are framed and kept in the house. Many small farm sheds and outbuildings on left. Date of Construction: c. 1861. There are very few of these Greek revival cottages in South Georgia. This one is especially nice.
