- Description:
- Herman Eugene Talmadge (1913-2002), son of Gov. Eugene Talmadge, was born in 1913 in Telfair County, Georgia. In 1946, Talmadge ran his father's successful Democratic race for governor, though the elder Talmadge died before he could take office. The state legislature elected Herman to take his father's place, but the Supreme Court of Georgia ruled the move unconstitutional.Talmadge came back to win a special election in 1948, and served a full term as governor in 1950.; H. E. Talmadge makes a public appearance, along with a panel of academics, at an event hosted by the Georgia Political Heritage Program on January 29, 1986 at West Georgia College.; Talmadge begins by recounting the progression of the US involvement with Vietnam leading to the Vietnam War, from the presidency of Eisenhower to that of Johnson. The panel initially asks Talmadge to discuss his opinion of the truth and accuracy of the information fed to the American public of the happenings in Vietnam, then going on to ask about the state of Georgia's involvement specifically. Topics such as the draft arise, with Talmadge responding with the belief: "my country, right or wrong." Talmadge then discusses the effect that the war had upon the US legislation, such as with the subsequent limitation of presidential power, and then speaks of the differences of the styles of each president that had been in office during the war. Some of the more controversial moments of the war are discussed, Talmadge giving his opinion on each. Parallels between Vietnam and South American incidents as well as issues of conscientious objectors are argued. Questions are then opened to the public; issues such as dissent, Civil Rights, South America, communism, etc. are discussed.
