- Description:
- Patrick Lynn Swindall was born in Gadsden, Alabama, in 1950. In 1984, the Republican won the 4th District Congressional seat. He lost that seat to "Dukes of Hazard" star Ben Jones in 1988. Swindall was convicted of perjury in 1992 and served a year in prison. He currently lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia.; Interviewed by Dr. Mel Steely and Professor Ted Fitzsimmons on October 3, 1989 at Pat Swindall's home in Stone Mountain, Georgia.; Congressman Pat Swindall begins the interview by discussing his childhood and family life in Alabama. He spends the vast majority of the interview telling anecdotes about his rebellious youth, his relationships with his advisors, predecessors, and experiences in college. He discusses his religious beliefs and their affect on his political endeavors. Swindall then answers questions about his time at the University of Georgia, his time as the student body president, and his years in law school. He tells stories about his former advisors and their attempts to slander his name in the press and how he chose to handle criticism as he ran for Congress. He cites that Elliott Levitas "represents all that is wrong with the political system in the South," revealing why he made the decision to run against Levatis for a congressional seat. Swindall then goes into detail about his take on theology and the "various sub-categories of Christianity in contemporary America." He closes out the interview by addressing the issues that faced him during his first term, including African famine relief, abortion, school prayer, and the role of the Department of Education. This interview took place in the same year that Swindall was taken to court for nine counts of perjury.
